Walter Slezak was an Austrian actor.

Biography[]

Born to operatic tenor Leo Slezak in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, his elder sister Margarete was also a performer. Slezak made his film debut in the 1922 silent picture Sodom und Gomorrah and was a stage performer for several years before making his first appearance on the American cinema in 1942. He had roles in such films as The Princess and the Pirate, Born to Kill and Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion, usually playing portly villains.

Slezak also appeared on a number of radio shows and made several appearances on television, notably playing The Clock King in Batman. As well as musicals he also had stage roles in such straight plays as Ode to Liberty and Little Dark Horse.

Slezak passed away in 1983.

Singing[]

A star of musical comedies on stage, Slezak originated such roles as Karl Reder in Music in the Air, Professor Volk in May Wine and Harry Szigetti in I Married an Angel. He also sang several songs in German in the film Lifeboat, as well as the Cliff Richards comedy Wonderful Life. In 1954 he won a Tony Award for his role in Fanny.
