Walter Matthau was an American actor.

Biography[]

Born Walter Matthow in New York City, he studied at the Dramatic Workshop of the New School before appearing in such plays as Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and A Shot in the Dark, gaining a Tony Award in 1962. In 1955 he made his motion picture debut and soon appeared in A Face in the Crowd, Lonely Are the Brave and Fail Safe.

Matthau gained recognition however when he began to appear in comedies including The Odd Couple and The Fortune Cookie, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also played Dennis the Menace's arch-nemesis Mr. Wilson in the television show of the same name.

Matthau passed away in 2000.

Singing[]

Matthau made his musical debut as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls before taking the role of Horace Vandergelder in the film Hello, Dolly!

Matthau also sang "Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning" on The George Burns Special as well as several songs in The Stingiest Man in Town, where he played Ebenezer Scrooge.
