Vivien Leigh was an Indian born British actress.

Biography[]

Born Vivian Hartley in Darjeeling, British India, she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and made both her screen and stage debuts in 1935, the latter of which earned her excellent reviews. She later appeared as Ophelia in Hamlet, before appearing in Gone With the Wind, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Leigh would go back to her stage origins later on, appearing in 'The Skin of Our Teeth, Antigone and The Sleeping Prince. She gained a second Academy Award for A Streetcar Named Desire, and appeared in the films The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone and Ship of Fools.

Leigh passed away in 1967.

Leigh sang briefly in a number of her films, but most notably performed in her Tony Award winning role as Tatiana in Tovarich.
