Sophia Loren is an Italian actress.

Biography[]

Born Sofia Scicolone in Rome, Italy, she made her film debut as an extra in Quo Vadis and began to appear in a number of supporting roles until her first major break in The Gold of Naples. She also notably became the first performer to win an Academy Award for a performance in a foreign language for her part in Two Women. She received a subsequent nomination for Marriage-Italian Style.

Though appearing in fewer films after becoming a parent, Loren would go on to become a style icon across the world whilst continuing to make appearances in such films as El Cid and The Millionairess.

Singing[]

Loren sang in several films both English language and her native Italian, beginning with "Mambo Bacan" in The River Girl and notably performing "Tuo Vuò fà l'Americano" in It Started in Naples, as well as collaborating with Peter Sellers on Peter and Sophia.

Loren also appeared in two major movie musicals, playing Aldonza the barmaid/prostitute in Man of La Mancha and several decades later as Mama Contini in Nine.
