Robert Alda was an American actor.
Biography[]
Born Alphonso D'Abruzzo in New York City, Alda began his show business career as a singer and dancer in burlesque and vaudeville, and later was cast as George Gershwin in his first motion picture, Rhapsody in Blue, in 1945.
Alda would go on to appear in a number of films, including the adventure picture Tarzan and the Slave Girl, and the comedy Two Gals and a Guy, whilst his sons Alan and Antony became actors too.
Alda passed away in 1986.
Singing[]
Alda sang a number of times on stage and screen, in his second film Cinderella Jones and as the Master of Ceremonies in Hollywood Varieties, singing the self-penned "Be There My Love".
Alda's most notable singing role was Sky Masterson in the original Guys and Dolls, in which he sang the classic "Luck Be a Lady". He later appeared in the musical What Makes Sammy Run? in the role of Al Manhaim, and released two easy listening albums, Robert Alda Sings Romance of Rome and Love Under Italian Skies.
