Richard Gere is an American actor.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gere first acted professionally at the Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as being accomplished as a trumpeter and pianist. He was praised for his early stage roles in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Bent, before gaining screen success in American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman.

Gere became a major Hollywood star with appearances in such films as Pretty Woman, Shall We Dance? and Arbitrage. He also became known as a committed human rights activist and a notable Zen Buddhist.

As well as his early stage role as an understudy in the original London production of Grease, Gere sang twice onscreen, briefly in Looking for Mr. Goodbar and more substantially as Billy Flynn in Chicago, which included the solo number "All I Care About is Love."
