Ramón Novarro was a Mexican actor.

Biography[]

Born Jose Samaniego in Durango City, Mexico, he began as a ballet dancer, piano teacher and singing waiter before moving into films by playing small roles in silent films, making his first major success as Andre-Louis Moreau in Scaramouche and appearing in the silent production of Ben Hur.

Novarro made his first talking appearance in 1929, going on to take roles in Mata Hari, We Were Strangers and The Outriders well as having a role on television in The High Chipparal.

Novarro was murdered in 1968.

Novarro sang in a number of his films once he moved into sound, frequently accompanying himself on guitar in films including In Gay Madrid, A Night in Cairo and The Night is Young.
