Paul Scofield was an English actor.

Biography[]

Born David Paul Scofield in Birmingham, Warwickshire, Scofield joined Croydon Repertory Theatre and made his stage debut in Desire Under the Elms in 1940. He soon became regarded as an excellent Shakesperian actor after performances in Pericles, Prince of Tyre and Hamlet, as well as award winning role as Sir Thomas More in A Man for All Seasons, which he reprised for the film adaptation in 1966 (winning an Academy Award), and Antonio Salieri in Amadeus.

Though predominantly a stage performer, Scofield made some appearances on film, including The Train, Quiz Show (for which he earned a second Academy Award nomination) and The Crucible, as the stern Judge Thomas Danforth.

Scofield passed away in 2008.
