Orson Bean was an American actor.

Biography[]

Born Dallas Burrows in Burlington, Vermont, he served in the Army before serving as a stage magician and studying theatre at the HB Studio. He appeared many times early in his career, mostly in filmed versions of stage productions, including The Square Peg, Arsenic and Old Lace and the original cast of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? On television he was best known as a game show panellist and comic.

Bean also had character roles on television, in Te Twilight Zone, The Love Boat and The Facts of Life amongst others, as well as appearing in the films Miracle on 34th Street, Being John Malkovich and The Equalizer 2. He provided the voice for Bilbo Baggins in the animated film The Hobbit in 1977.

Bean passed away in 2020.

Singing[]

Bean had a number of musical appearances, originating the roles of Charlie Smith and Homer Thrace in Subways Are for Sleeping (for which he won a Tony Award nomination) and Ilya Darling respectively. He also appeared as Cocky in The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd and Mr Applegate in Damn Yankees. He also appeared as the title character on the original studio album for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
