Maria Karnilova was an American actress.

Biography[]

Born Maria Dovgolenko in Hartford, Connecticut, she initially worked as a dancer in various revues and non-singing ensemble roles in Broadway shows before making her name as Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress. The following year she received a nomination for Zorbá.

Karnilova also appeared in the film The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Mayored to the Mob.

She passed away in 2001.

Singing[]

Karnilova initially began singing in revues such as Call Me Mister and Two's Company before playing larger roles such as Dolly Trull in The Beggar's Opera and Tessie Tura in the original cast of Gypsy.

Karnilova would also go on to originate a number of roles including Therese in Apollo and Miss Agnes, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof and "Mamita" in the stage musical Gigi. Her last singing role was as The Queen in the musical Cinderella.
