Kirk Douglas was an American actor.

Biography[]

Born Issur Danielovitch in Amsterdam, New York, he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts after a number of different careers, and after serving in the United States Navy, performed in advertisements, on the radio and theatre, appearing later on in the stage production Three Sisters on Broadway. He made his film debut in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers and soon received a Academy Award nomination for his performance in Champion.

Douglas made a large number of succesful films including Young Man with Horn, The Bad and the Beautiful and most famously as the title character in Spartacus. He also produced the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and made a number of successful film appearances alongside Burt Lancaster. Even in his later years, Douglas continued to make film appearances including Diamonds and It Runs in the Family, co-created by his son and fellow actor Michael.

Douglas passed away in 2020.

Over his long career, Douglas sang a number of times, beginning with his role as Jim O'Connor in The Glass Menagerie. He would later sing in guest appearances on television, as Ned Land in 20,000 Under the Seas and in the titular role as the lead character in the musical Dr. Jekyll & Hyde.
