Joss Ackland was an English actor.

Biography[]

Born Sidney Ackland in South Kensington, London, he studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama and later joined the Old Vic, appearing in productions of Twelfth Night and Henry V, making his film debut in 1949 and appeared in a number of television series, including Z-Cars, The Persuaders and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy.

Ackland's crisp bass voice also led to a career in voice acting, playing the Black Rabbit in Watership Down, The Thief and the Cobbler, and narrating the series In Search of the Great Beast 666.

Ackland passed away in 2023.

Singing[]

Ackland appeared in a number of stage musicals, originating the title role in Jorrocks and playing Fredrik Egerman in the London production of A Little Night Music. He also appeared in the original production of Evita playing Juan Peron, and musical biopic Jean Seberg as Romain Gary.

In addition, Ackland briefly sang in a number of films, including The Little Prince where he played The King, The Apple, where he performed the solo number "Child of Love", and I'll Be There, as the rocker Evil Edmonds.
