John Gielgud was an English actor.

Biography[]

Born in South Kensington, London, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, appearing in plays such as The Vortex and The Patriot, before establishing himself as a Shakesperian actor, gaining critical acclaim for his leading role in Hamlet. He would appear in a large number of plays in his life (as well as directing several), highlights including The Importance of Being Earnest, No Man's Land and Home.

Gielgud also appeared onscreen in a number occasions following his debut in 1924, having roles in Julius Caesar, Prospero's Books and an Academy Award winning turn in Arthur. He also appeared both in many television programmes and radio plays during his illustrious career.

Gielgud passed away in 2000.

Gielgud played the role of Colonel Pickering on the 1986 studio recording of My Fair Lady.
