Jean Hagen was an American actress.

Biography[]

Born Jean Verhagen in Chicago, Illinois, she initially appeared on radio in such series as Light of the World and Hollywood Story and on Broadway before making her film debut in Adam's Rib in 1949. She received acclaim for her early lead in The Asphalt Jungle and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as the talentless Lina Lamont in Singin' in the Rain.

Hagen also acheived great success as Margaret Williams in Make Room for Daddy, receiving an Emmy nomination for each of the three seasons in which she appeared. She also had supporting and guest roles in such series as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Starsky and Hutch as well as films including Dead Ringer and The Shaggy Dog.

Hagen passed away in 1977.

Hagen sang briefly in the films Side Street and No Questions Asked; more prominent however was the role of Margaret in Make Room for Daddy, which called on her to perform such numbers as "I've Got the World on a String" and "My Valentine."
