Ian Charleson was a Scottish actor.

Biography[]

Born in Edinburgh, he was initially a boy soprano who studied at LAMDA before working with the Young Vic Theatre Company. He appeared in such theatre shows as Look Back in Anger and Scapino before portraying the lead in Hamlet and receiving an Olivier nomination for Fool for Love.

Charleson also acheived major success for his screen roles as Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire and Charlie Andrews in Gandhi. He appeared in such television programmes as The Devil's Lieutenant and The Search for Alexander the Great.

Charleson passed away in 1990.

Singing[]

Charleson sang in a number of stage musicals, playing a brother in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls. He also originated the role of Donald in Cricket and sang several songs as Ariel in the 1978 production of The Tempest.
