Herbert Lom was a Czech actor.

Biography[]

Born Herbert Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru into a noble family in Prague, he changed his original surname to Lom upon becoming an actor due to its impractical length, and made his screen debut in 1937. He made a number of notable early screen appearances, twice portraying Napoleon Bonaparte and later appearing in comedy The Ladykillers.

Lom's most famous role would come from acting opposite his Ladykillers costar Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther series, playing the long-suffering Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, who is slowly driven to madness by Inspector Clouseau's antics. He also gave memorable performances as Captain Nemo in The Mysterious Island and the title character in The Phantom of the Opera, as well as writing two well received historical novels.

Lom passed away in 2012.

Singing[]

Lom had only one (albeit notable) musical role to his name, that of the King in the original London cast of The King and I. Onscreen, he sang briefly in Trail of the Pink Panther, when Dreyfus believes he is rid of Inspector Clouseau forever.
