Geraldine McEwan was an English actress.

Biography[]

Born Geraldine McKeown in Old Windsor, Berkshire, she took elocution lessons as a young woman and was assistant manager at the Theatre Royal in Windsor before making her debut as Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1946. She made a number of appearances with the repertory company before a West End debut in 1951 and a television debut in 1954. She first acheived recognition for her role as Olivia in Twelfth Night, and later joined the National Theatre Company, being cast in Dance of Death at the request of Laurence Olivier.

In later years McEwan became popular on television, becoming the definitive lead in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and as Miss Marple in numerous adaptations. She also appeared in films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and received a television BAFTA for her role in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit

McEwan passed away in 2015.

McEwan had two singing roles in her career, briefly singing "Daisy Bell" in Mulberry, and duetting "The Way You Look Tonight in the 2000 version of Love's Labour's Lost.
