George Baker was a Bulgarian born English actor.

Biography[]

Born in Varna, Bulgaria, he made his film debut in 1953 before having a major supporting role in The Dam Busters and leads in The Ship That Died of Shame and These Dangerous Years. He also notably appeared as Sir Hilary Bray in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and later Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me as Captain Benson.

Later, Baker became recognised for his television work in Bowler, The Prisoner and notably as Emperor Tiberius in I, Claudius, as well as frequently portraying Inspector Reg Wexford in several crime/mystery dramas. Onstage, he had leading roles in Richard II (as Bolingbroke), The Importance of Being Earnest (as Jack) and Hamlet (as Claudius). He also wrote a succesful television play entitled Fatal Spring.

Baker passed away in 2011.
