Fred Gwynne was an American actor.

Biography[]

Born Frederick Gwynne in New York City, he performed as part of the musical group the Harvard Krokodiloes, the Hasty Pudding Theatrical group and the Brattle Theatre Repertory Company before his first Broadway role in 1952 and film debut in On the Waterfront. He would go on to appear on The Phil Silvers Show which would lead to his being cast as Patrolman Francis Muldoon in Car 54, Where Are You?

Gwynne also became well known for his starring role as family patriarch Herman Munster in The Munsters, as well as his appearances in such plays as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and films including Ironweed and My Cousin Vinny.

Gwynne passed away in 1993.

Singing[]

Whilst he sang briefly in his long running roles of Officer Muldoon in Car 54, Where Are You? and Herman Munster in The Munsters, Gwynne had much larger singing roles onstage; playing Polyte-le-Mou in Irma La Douce on Broadway and Major Dillon in the original production of More Than You Deserve as well as playing Hennesy in the television film adaptation of Dames at Sea.
