Conrad Veidt was a German actor.
Biography[]
Born Hans Weidt in Berlin, Germany, he served in the German Army in World War One before becoming interested in the theatre. His earliest film appearances came in the German Expressionist period, playing Cesare The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Gwynplaine in The Man Who Laughs.
Veidt left Germany to escape the Nazis in the 1930s, and appeared in British and Hollywood films, including The Spy in Black and The Thief of Baghdad. In 1942, he would make one of his most memorable appearances; as Major Heinrich Strasser in Casablanca.
He passed away in 1943.
Singing[]
Veidt sang in two roles (coincidentally playing a Major in both), in F.P.1 where he sings "The Lighthouse Shines Across the Bay" and in Casablanca where he leads the German officers in singing "The Watch on the Rhine".
