Cloris Leachman is an American actress.
Biography[]
Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Leachman studied at both Illinois State and Northwestern University before taking part in the Miss America pageant of 1946. Making her film debut in 1947, she appeared in such films as Kiss Me Deadly and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as well as television series including Suspense and Lassie. In addition, Leachman enjoyed a successful stage career both in musicals and straight plays.
In 1971, Leachman won an Academy Award for The Last Picture Show, and gained further recognition for her long-standing role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, as well as her work with Mel Brooks, which included pictures such as Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety.
Singing[]
Leachman made a notable singing debut understudying the role of Nellie Forbush in the original cast of South Pacific and appeared in the television film Of Thee I Sing. She also appeared in a number of smaller musical productions including Wonderful Town and Show Boat.
Leachman had supporting musical roles in several films, playing the antagonistic Griselda in Hansel and Gretel and the voice roles of Aunt Agnes in Annabelle's Wish and Dotty Rounder in The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure.
