Carmen Mathews was an American actress.

Biography[]

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mathews studied at both Bennett Junior College and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, leading to several Shakespearian roles in both England and the United States. She would also appear on television in filmed stage productions.

Mathews made guest appearances in numerous television series including You Are There (as both Susan B. Anthony and Queen Elizabeth I), The Fugitive and The Twilight Zone as well as the motion pictures Rabbit, Run, Heartbreak House and Sounder.

Mathews passed away in 1995.

Singing[]

Mathews made singing appearances in a number of stage productions, originating a number of roles. These would include her musical debut as Theresa Tapper in Courtin' Time, Mrs. Hutto in The Yearling and later Aunt Betsey Trotwood in the Broadway musical Copperfield.

Mathews would also appear in the role of Fraulein Schneider in a production of Cabaret and memorably played Colonel Lilian Rayburn on the television series M*A*S*H.
