Brian Aherne was an English actor.

Biography[]

Born William de Lacy Aherne in King's Norton, Worcestershire, he studied at the Italia Conti school as an actor (amongst others) and made his stage debut with the Pilgrim Players in 1910. He appeared in a number of other stage plays, including Where the Rainbow Ends, Paddy the Next Best Thing and The Flame before moving into films. He debuted in the silent film The Eleventh Commandment, but later appeared in talkies The W. Plan and Madame Guillotine.

Aherne's major successes were divided between screen and stage performances; he appeared in plays including The Admirable Crichton, The Barretts of Wimpole and She Stoops to Conquer and films such as I Live My Life, Captain Fury and an Academy Award nominated turn in Juarez. He also had guest roles in television shows The Billy Rose Show and Pulitzer Prize Playhouse and penned the book A Dreadful Man about his friend, actor George Sanders.

Aherne passes away in 1986.

Aherne sang briefly in the film Skylark, but more substantially, as Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady.
