Beth Howland is an American actress.

Biography[]

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Howland moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. After a debut in 1959, she was able to play a number of stage roles, the best known being in the original cast of Company.

After Company, Howland then proceeded to focus on television roles, with guest appearances on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Fantasy Island, as well as the regular role of Vera in Alice, for which she received four Golden Globe nominations. Despite going into semi-retirement, she still continued to guest on several shows and appear in television films.

Howland passed away in 2015.

Howland worked predominantly in musical theatre, making her Broadway debut as Lady Beth in Once Upon a Mattress. She also originated the roles of Beth in High Spirits and Rosalind in Darling of the Day during their original Broadway openings. However, her most prominent role was as Amy in the original cast of Company.
