Bernard Hill is an English actor.

Biography[]

Born in Blackley, Manchester, he studied at Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama and had a number of small roles in television series such as I, Claudius and BBC Television Shakespeare as well as playing the role that brought him to notice, namely that of Yosser Hughes in The Black Stuff and the sequel Boys from the Black Stuff. He also appeared on stage, playing parts including Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night and the title role in Macbeth.

Hill gained critical acclaim as a character actor in films such as Shirley Valentine, Titanic (as Captain Edward J. Smith) and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (where he appeared as the bold King Théoden of Rohan). He also worked as a voice actor in the video games Fable III and World of Warcraft and the animated film ParaNorman, as well as returning to television as the Duke of Norfolk in Wolf Hall and Father Robert Robert Greaves in Unforgotten respectively.

Singing[]

Hill originated the role of John Lennon in John, Paul, George, Ringo... and Bert as well as singing "Bottom's Song" in Shakespeare: The Animated Tales and briefly singing along to "The Story of My Life" in Unforgotten.
