Alec Guinness was an English actor.

Biography[]

Born in Paddington, London, he made his stage debut in the play Libel and signed up as a member of the Old Vic, appearing in Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night and King Lear before receiving a Tony Award for his role as Dylan Thomas in Dylan. Onscreen, he soon became famous for his roles in such Ealing Comedies as Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Ladykillers as well as the David Lean films The Bridge on the River Kwai and Oliver Twist.

In later years, Guinness gained further fame for playing the Jedi Knight Obi Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars trilogy and appeared in the television series Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy as George Smiley. He received an Academy Award nomination for his role in Little Dorrit.

Guinness passed away in 2000.
